Examine the ways empirical evidence should be used to make progress in different areas of knowledge.
In this context, is it right to consider progress as "getting closer to the truth"?

That certainly could be one interpretation. Are there any others?
T,
Like Mr. Kitching insightfully said in my class, it is important to consider the question of whether knowledge does actually progress. I think another important thing to consider is whether progress in different areas of knowledge is the same. Now to avoid the canker of answering questions with questions, I would now give you my personal view of it.
I do not know if the "truth" does exist but I think that progress in an area of knowledge would be the development of ideas or theories that are useful in developing others or solving existing questions. Hence for me the concept of progress in an area of knowledge would be based on the utilitarianism of the knowledge developed.
Additionally, I would like you to tell me what you mean by "getting closer to the truth". In my view, this begs the question of whether the knowledge we accumulated over the years is "not true"
Hope I have been helpful.
