And what makes a good portrait by a painter? Is there a difference?

Although a painter can depict his subject in a wider variety of forms with a wider variety of techniques, I suspect that there may be no difference at all. The aim of all portraiture is to capture the personality (or an aspect of the personality) of the subject.
