Binyam don’t you think both are important in different ways? Since time immemorial human beings wanted to understand two things – themselves and the world around them. The natural sciences seem to be more important to us today may be because of technological advances and achievements in medicine. But if we don’t have an understanding of ourselves and how we behave under various circumstances we cannot even invent the kind of technology we need or we cannot stop things that can be harmful to us in the long run. On top of that disciplines like economics are important to us for all their practicalities.

To add a few words, science and technology do not exist for existence sake, they are there to make life easier to mankind. So these two areas of knowledge are complements.

Economics maybe important but only to some extent and this is because the integral part of the course itself is predicability however I dont see any practicality in it.
Furthermore economics tries to put things constant "all other things being equal" to explain it's theory which is not possible in real life because the world is a dynamic system.

Based on the above, I really dont think Economics is that impotant

Hey Hot Ice,

Are you studying economics as part of your IB programme? Sounds like it. I wouldn't have to ask if I knew your name - let's think about knowing who we are talking to!

But don't natural scientists also make assumptions and look at systems from the "all other things being equal" perspective? Think of how in physics we learn about the behaviour of masses on frictionless surfaces, or in population genetics we assume random mating between individuals, etc. What is the difference with economics? More assumptions?

Hope you're still enjoying your economics course!

Anyone else got an opinion on this?

Both sciences are equally important. They are linked in a somewhat symbiotic way in that. for humans to truly understand the world we live in, we must first have a deep understanding of who we are as a race. And to further this understanding, we need an advancement in the natural sciences. for one to progress, the other must also grow. Hence, for a truly meaningful life an understanding of the natural sciences is as important as an understanding of the social sciences.
